In the academic and legal world, he is indefatigably a reputable icon. Over the years, he tutored over 60 Senior Advocates of Nigeria and that made him a force to reckon with. Prof Akin Oyebode, a professor of international law does not mince words when it comes to dissecting issues.
In this exclusive interview with Femi Ayodele of Naij.com, the legal luminary talked about what should be the priorities of the Buhari-led administration in the next one year; how he can turn Nigeria to the true giant of Africa, among other sundry national issues.
Recently, President Mohammadu Buhari marked 100 days in office. What is your assessment of his performance in the last four months?
There is nothing really heart-shaking President Buhari has done because it’s just a couple of days he sworn-in his key kitchen cabinet members. But I think his personal has impacted on his goings-on.
His anti-corruption stance has impacted on the consciousness of quite a number of Nigerians. He is still revering for a take-off if you ask me. Until we see the key members of his cabinet, we will be able to put a finger on his mindset. He can’t do it alone.
A president is as good as the men and women surrounding him. We don’t know who the ministers are. He promised to elect them in September and we can leave by rumors or hearsay.
Nigerians are all ears and they have postponed their verdict on PMB until they see the whole team he will use to actualise his promises he made to Nigerians.
”Buhari can’t do it alone. A president is as good as the men and women surrounding him”
Don’t forget, this is the first time in the political history of the country that a sitting government will be defeated. The Ghanaians have had it thrice.
They have demonstrated greater political panache than Nigeria. Nigerians might be late in coming but they have effected change of a government peacefully and four months after, you now ask me to pass a judgement? I think he is still preparing the ingredients of the soup. It is after the soup is done that we will judge if he is a good chef or not.
It’s been four months since the president assumed office but he is yet to appoint his ministers. Do you feel this is ideal? Does the constitution support his action?
It is clear the constitution says he has to appoint ministers to help him actualise his policies. Not only that, there should be regular meetings with the ministers. Since the ministers are not appointed, Buhari has not carried out the letters of the constitution.
Although you can say his spirit is in tune with the law. When talking about meeting, I’m not saying we should go back to Wednesday meetings for contract awarding like we had during Jonathan’s administration. Life is more than contacts.
There should be agenda setting; accentuating the game plan and elaborating the strategies and tactics of effectuating the agenda of his administration. To bring together the savvy and knowledge of the men and women he would engage as minsters.
He must be able to engage very brilliant and competent people who through their inputs he would make well-informed decisions coupled with the impact of other decision makers. Governance is not a one-man’s band however brilliant or smart.

Secondary School Cultists Stab Boy With Poisoned Knife Leg Amputated, See Photo
When 16-year-old boy, Oluwadamilare Olugbamu, left home for school on the morning of July 1, 2015, he probably didn’t know the magnitude of danger that was ahead of him.
Shortly after the young lad had left the compound of his Nawarudeen Secondary School, Jibowu, Lagos, at the close of school hours, he was attacked with a knife by another 16-year-old boy suspected to be a cult member.
The assailant, Idris Ajagbe, a pupil of Birel Secondary School, Lagos, stabbed him in the left thigh, with a knife, which the family said might have been poisoned.
Eleven days after the attack, his left leg was amputated at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos because blood no longer flowed through it.
Again on August 15, the same leg had to be re-amputated again because it continued to bleed without healing.
This bizarre case has left a lot of questions than answers on the issue of cult groups in secondary schools in Nigeria.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that there has been an enmity between pupils of Birel Secondary School, Yaba, and Lagos City College, Yaba on one side and Nawarudeen Secondary School and Mainland Secondary School, Yaba on the other side.
But matters came to the head on July 1, when the school rift snowballed into an all-out attack against pupils of Nawarudeen Secondary School.
According to Oluwadamilare’s sister, Opeyemi, the students of these schools were always bullying one another on their way home from school.
“The day my brother was attacked, there was a football match between students of Nawarudeen and Mainland. It was during the match that the fight started. It was not serious until the students left school and started going home,” Opeyemi told our correspondent.
Oluwadamilare, who is still in excruciating pain on hospital bed as a result to the two amputations he has suffered, explained that he was going home when pupils of Lagos City College Started to throw stones at students of Nawarudeen.
According to him, pupils of his own school decided to retaliate by throwing stones back at the aggressors too.
Soon, the fight escalated as a student of Lagos City College allegedly brought out a cutlass and inflicted a cut on one of the pupils of Nawarudeen.
“The boy that was cut struggled to take the cutlass away from the Lagos City College boy. When he collected the cutlass, he retaliated by cutting the boy in the head. When we all saw blood gushing out of the boy’s head, we ran away,” Oluwadamilare said.
But the matter did not end there. In fact, Oluwadamilare’s worst nightmare was about to become reality.
On his way home, he saw a cousin in the company of some pupils of Lagos City College and Birel Secondary School and called out to him. Oluwadamilare said his hope was that he would leave the company of the boys and accompany him home.
But as soon as the other boys with his cousin sighted him, they ran after him, stoning him as they did so.
Oluwadamilare said he fell down after one of the boys identified as Tosin Ogidiolu of Birel Secondary School kicked him.
The boys allegedly pounced on him, beating and kicking him as he lay on the ground begging them to stop.
As the mob continued their action on Oluwadamilare, one of them (Idris Ajagbe, whom other pupils attested to being a cult member) drew out a knife and stabbed him in the thigh.
As they beat him, his cousin begged them to stop, but some of them, who were armed with metal pipes, continued to beat him until he fell unconscious.
The boys ran away only when he became unconscious, it was learnt.
Oluwadamilare’s sister explained that a teacher, who was passing by and saw the boy bleeding and unconscious, decided to rush him to the hospital, where his injuries were dressed and the knife wound was stitched.
“By the time I was informed and rushed to the hospital, my brother’s leg had swollen so big. We had to report the case to the Sabo Police Division after that,” Opeyemi said.
However, doctors at the hospital where his wound was dressed realised all was not well with the boy when he continued to scream in pain and the leg continued to swell.
He was referred to the surgical emergency ward of LASUTH the following day, where it was decided that nothing could be done to save the leg.
A number of tests were conducted while some consultants were summoned to examine the leg. But Oluwadamilare’s fate was sealed.
After the first amputation, Oluwadamilare was said to have bled so much that he required 21 pints of blood before the leg had to be re-amputated.
Saturday PUNCH learnt that Ajagbe has since been on the run. Before he fled, he dropped a note at home for his mother, explaining that he decided to run away from home because he stabbed someone to death.
But the police were able to round up the other pupils involved in the attack along with Oluwadamilare’s cousin.
Seven of the boys were charged before a Yaba Magistrate’s Court, Lagos for offences ranging from hooliganism, conspiracy to felony. The case was adjourned till November 23.

Father Of Five Was Beaten To Death By His Landlod's Son
Father of five, Mumini Muritala, 40, who lived at Omilabu Area of Odinjo, was reportedly beaten to death on Friday night, following a quarrel between him and his landlord’s son, Yusuf Adegbayi, Sunday Tribune has learnt.
Wife of the deceased, Mrs Shakirat Muritala, who spoke with Sunday Tribune at a nearby hospital, said that she had just sent her daughter, Barakat, out to buy her food, when the landlord’s sons, Yusuf and his brother, Habeeb Adegbayi, locked the main door to the house around 9.pm, an action which later caused uproar between her and the landlord’s sons.
“When my husband and daughter came back home, Yusuf and Habeeb went inside their rooms, but my husband went to them to enquire why they locked the door so quickly.
“This resulted in a heated argument and Yusuf slapped my husband. My husband wanted to retaliate, but the two boys pounced on him and beat him blue abd black.
“Later, Yusuf came back and hit my husband with an occultic ring he said he would use on him. Suddenly, my husband turned around and fell on the ground. We rushed him to the hospital, but he later gave up,” the wife said.
However, when the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Oyo State was contacted, he told Sunday Tribune that the suspect had fled, but efforts were ongoing to nab him, while his father, the landlord, was in police custody at the Idi Aro police station, from where the case would be transferred to the State Criminial and Intelligence Department for discrete investigation.
He, however, used the opportunity to warn those who would like to engage in criminal acts to desist henceforth.

Mr Busienei further revealed how the family requested a burial permit from him after leaving the hospital.“I told my assistant chief to issue them with a permit to allow the deceased family to lay him to rest,”said Busienei. However, the next day, Assistant Chief Paul Bett confirmed that he indeed gave the family the burial permit on July 19.“He died on July 18 on his way to the hospital and his son came for the permit the following day,”said Mr Bett.
When journalists visited the compound of the deceased self-proclaimed god, his 70 wives and children, were said to have gone violent, forcefully pursuing the newsmen out of their compound. They were said to have told the newsmen that they had no business in the compound and that their god,“mungu mwenye enzi”was safe. At first, there was speculation that Jehovah had been hospitalised in Cherangany before being transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.
Reports made it known that Wanyonyi, who also has an impressive number of followers in Uganda, had back problems four years ago.
